A WordPress theme is a collection of files that governs the overall look of your website. Themes may govern anything from your site's style to the colors of its hyperlinks. It's common to think of a theme as a "skin" for your website, but they're much more than that.

A theme allows you to manage the appearance of your site rather than just giving a look and feel to your blog. For example, suppose you have a culinary blog as well as an internet store. The correct theme may show your blog posts in a specific way while providing an entirely different style for the pages of your store.
WordPress includes themes by default. In reality, the platform comes with a variety of pre-installed themes. However, there are a few reasons why you might wish to select and install a new theme on your website:
- if you have a specific vision for your site, you may select an appropriate theme and tweak it to match your needs
- if you have no design or coding knowledge, many themes provide a plethora of adjustments to assist you in creating the perfect design
- you can add more capabilities
- depending on your requirements, a theme may feature functionality exclusive to your specialty that is not available elsewhere
